Introduction
The Rainforest Alliance and its partners are working to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhancing carbon removals across farming systems, landscapes and company supply chains. A key part of this work is to enhance climate mitigation across coffee, cocoa, and tea farming systems.
In order to implement climate mitigation action across these farming systems, it is important to understand the current emissions from on-farm production, the opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the potential to enhance carbon sequestration through the adoption of agroforestry and other climate-smart management practices.
To address these questions, the Climate Unit commissioned a detailed review and synthesis of the available technical and scientific literature on carbon footprints, carbon stocks and sequestration in coffee, cocoa, and tea production systems, which was completed in May 2023.
The following reference sheets provide a summary of the results and key findings and are intended to be used by RA staff to inform the development of climate mitigation initiatives.
