What is this document about?

The Risk Assessment Tool comprises:

1. A risk assessment (preparation phase to be repeated at least every three years).

The topics covered in the Risk Assessment are as follows:

  • Management and Traceability: farm area, productivity and traceability.

  • Farming Practices: agrochemical management, soil fertility and conservation.

  • Working Conditions: grievance mechanism, Assess-and-Address (child labor, forced labor, discrimination, workplace

  • violence and harassment), gender equality and housing and living conditions

  • Environment: High Conservation Value areas, conservation and enhancement of natural ecosystems and vegetation.

2. An Assess-and-Address risk assessment (conducted in year 1 and repeated at least every three years).

The Assess-and-Address risk assessment is applicable in case of medium/high risk for child labor and/or forced labor according to the Rainforest Alliance child labor and forced labor risk maps. Large and individually certified farms always implement the improvements for discrimination and workplace violence and harassment.

The Assess-and-Address risk assessment is used to identify risks of human rights violations and the measures to mitigate those risks.

When and how to use this document?

The Certificate Holder completes the Risk Assessment Tool as a questionnaire.

  • For each topic there are a set of questions to be answered Yes or No.

  • Depending on the answer, recommended risk mitigation measures will appear in the next cell on the row.

  • If a question does not apply (e.g., no wetlands inside the farm) N/A should be selected and no mitigation measures will be displayed.

  • For questions where the CH does not know or is not sure, No should be selected to follow the related mitigation measures.

  • The specification of “low, medium and high risk” mitigation measures refers to the Rainforest Alliance Child Labor and Forced Labor Risk Maps applicable per country and product. For countries or crops not yet included in the risk maps the appropriate mitigation measures based on the identified risks must be selected. The Certificate Holder can save their progress anytime and return to finish the questionnaire.

Upon completing the Farm Risk Assessment Tool, the Certificate Holder receives an overview of Rainforest Alliance recommended mitigation measures for each identified risk. CHs may also suggest alternative mitigation measures better suited to their specific context. This can be entered in column titled "Certificate Holder's own mitigation measures."

These mitigation measures should be included in the management plan and their implementation tracked. Implementing mitigation measures for each identified risk is mandatory.

In groups that include both small and large farms, or groups made up solely of large farms, each large farm must carry out its own risk assessment in addition to the group management’s assessment covering the entire group.

The auditors will check whether the Risk Assessment has been conducted whether the mitigation measures are included in the management plan and are being implemented. Also, if the Certificate Holder decides to take different mitigation measures, this needs to be substantiated.
